I'm thinking about getting some new stuff for my rig, especially a fan controller and some more fans

For the fan controller I was thinking about getting this one because the temp sensors on my mobo aren't very accurate with most of the tools (Everest seems to be the most sane out of all of them, since HWMonitor and PC Probe II tend to show negative temps or they show my CPU jumping to over 120C at idle) and I have been looking at ways to monitor it. I was considering buying a multimeter, but then decided it would be pointless just to have one to check temps, so I decided to go for a fan controller that has temp displays built in. Compared to similar ones, this one seems to have the best readability at almost any angle, while others require you to look at them straight on.

I was thinking about getting 2 or 3 of these (2 for the front panel and maybe one for the side, if I get a window installed). I plan on removing the rear 120mm fan since my Tuniq is perfectly lined up with that hole and it may be restricting some airflow (I left it on low , yet the HSF is maxed out, so I may either switch it to high or just remove it). I'm keeping the plain black 140mm top fan though. These will be controlled with the fan controller.

Subtotal: About $73 with 2 fans and $93 with 3 fans


If I do get a window mod installed ($40 from mnpctech.com), I'm thinking about getting some lighting and new cables and maybe some other stuff like some UV cathodes and reactive wiring (not decided yet).

For what its worth I've gotten those same antec fans for like 12.99 or so when they're on sale at Frys. Too bad I pulled the LEDs out of mine/one went out or I'd send you the 2 I've got for a lot less than that, lol.

Also 2 other things, I wouldn't necessarily trust the fan controller to be much more accurate, and you really don't want multi speed fans with a fan controller, if you can find a cheaper LED single speed fan that's decent quality I'd do that. Though if it was me I'd just get some pwnsters like Deltas or Yate Loons as they're win among fans. But they tend not to come in LED models...

Yeah, a while back when I heard you pulled the LEDs out of yours I was like "OMG you should have just sold them to me"

Unfortunately we don't have a Fry's here (we only have a Best Buy now, since Circuit City closed a crapload of it's stores a while back) so I may just hit some of the local PC shops within the next few days to see what I can find.

I'm still thinking about getting a new keyboard (Lycosa, Eclipse 1 or 2, and G15 are some of the ones I'm looking at), and also the Fatal1ty 3.5mm headset

Holy crap, 150+ CFM . Heck I could probably pull the fan out of my Tuniq and put one of those bad boys in there (with that much airflow, would it even need a fan anyway? ). The Tuniq's stock fan is pretty loud IMO.

I could probably just stick some cathodes in there to still get the lighting effect.

The Yate Loons I've found so far don't come close to that much air (highest I found was less than 50 on Xoxide.com).

I found some other fans with about half the flow at half the price.

If I do go for the fan controller I posted earlier plus 2 of the Deltas, that comes out to roughly $100 (heck, I may just make it 3 and swap out the fan on the HS, for about $130, not including shipping and the headset/keyboard I still haven't decided on.)

FTLOG don't buy those deltas, they're the loudest thing on the planet, and most fan controllers don't have beefy enough circuitry to control them and would melt down. They spin at 4000 rpm which is about 1000 rpm more than you'd ever want in a normal computer. Those fans are built manly for servers that sit locked in a room where no one has to hear them.

Petras fan prices will smoke just about anyones, I'd just get a 4 pack at their prices. They have lots of cool other stuff too for modding.

You might not even need a fan controller for the yates they're pretty quiet at wide open

I'm still thinking about getting a controller though, maybe the Kaze Master Ace or something. I still can't find any good single speed LED ones though that have good CFMs (I'm still thinking about those Antec ones I posted earlier). Plus the controller should give me a way to adjust the speed on my Tuniq so I don't have to keep reaching behind it to adjust it (plus free up a card slot that I could be using for something else).

I also may hack off that ugly stamped out mesh on the cages and throw some custom grills on it (just an idea, but I haven't found any I like yet that are not sold out or discontinued ).

@ Stryker: Nothing's wrong with it, I just want to give it some more airflow (I have plenty of spots for extra fans, so why not), and to also maybe personalize it a bit. I want a new keyboard since I don't like the loud clickity one I have now.

As for Keyboards, still undecided (maybe not the Razer ones since some reviews say they are loud). The Saitek Cyborg looks awesome, but it only has red, amber, and green lighting (if it had blue, then I might have gone for it), so I'm probably going for the Eclipse series. In fact, a new one just came out.

Those fans should be pretty good with a fan controller, I think they're a little loud at full speed though. I have the SM version which is 70.5 cfm for my radiator, they seemed quiet hooked up outside my case but I haven't tried them attached to the radiator yet.

Yeah I know. They were supposed to get more yesterday afternoon, but they extended the ETA to the 17th (next Tuesday).

I may drop down to the SMs (same price as teh SH, yet the SL is $1 more ). The SHs are probably a little overkill


As for the keyboards, I might run to Best Buy tomorrow and see if I could test the keyboards they have there (I don't want one that sounds like horse hooves on pavement or one that feels too mushy).


Also do you think I can hit 4.2+? Everest and CPUz show it as 4005MHz, but when Xfire detected my rig specs, it said 4.2GHz (and the THG Clock tool is indicating about 4230MHz), while the BIOS detects it at about 4.02 at boot. I have a piece of paper here with the possible settings to get it to 4275 (I got it from a guide that shows how to OC my mobo).

It may be possible, are you using less than the maximum multiplier right now? Typically it reports a higher speed when your using below the top multiplier because some older programs just multiply the fsb x the max multiplier rather than the one you're actually using.

You're probably right, since 445 x 9.5 comes out to about 4225

I'm using 9.0 (max is 9.5)

LOL at my temp sensor showing 112C on the CPU (I hope it's just a bad sensor, since my cores don't get up past 60 under load and sit around 25 at idle). I'm not looking forward to reseating that monster if I have to do it.

I dunno, things like 110C showin up for your temps.. that kinda shit would bug the crap outta me.
I wouldn't wanna sit there looking at it and just thinking that it's only a bad sensor :/

I occasionally get negative temps on it also (I rebooted right after I read your post and the BIOS said it was 30, then I did it again right after and it said -96C, then I did it again and it was back at 30).

Plus I've been doing some reading on it and it seems like a common issue with the P5Q series, but they say you should be more concerned about the core temps and not what the regular CPU reading is.

I don't think the problem existed until I updated the BIOS not long after I got it.

I can't remember why. I could have been having the temp problem way back then and so I updated the BIOS to see if it would fix it. I can't remember.

Also I have a habit of [trying to] installing the latest updates for stuff even if they aren't needed
